Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area’s Weigand Marina in Nebraska will close to the public on 11 September to allow construction on a multimillion-dollar upgrade project, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The closure will cover the Weigand slips and boat ramp and is expected to continue through 2026.

Boaters will still have access to ramps at Miller Creek, Bloomfield and South Shore. The commission is preparing temporary measures at these sites, including parking expansion and additional mooring docks.

Park headquarters in the Weigand area will remain open, while campgrounds, lodging and other visitor facilities will not be affected. The first stage of construction will involve removing the existing docks.

In July 2025, the US Army Corps of Engineers invited public comment on a proposed expansion of the marina to meet growing demand. Plans highlighted additional boat slips, dredging of new areas, a relocated fuel dock, new parking and protective features such as a permanent breakwater and floating wave attenuators.

The draft environmental assessment was prepared under the National Environmental Policy Act. Data and visitor feedback showed that the current facilities are no longer sufficient for the number of users.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission stated that the closure and improvements are intended to support future capacity while ensuring recreational opportunities remain available in other parts of the park.
