Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has signed a land lease agreement with Uligan council to develop a yacht marina on Uligan in Haa Alif Atoll, with work expected to begin soon following a construction contract agreed earlier this year.

Covering more than seven hectares, the leased site will be used to establish a new yacht marina, with the initial development planned to accommodate approximately 18 vessels and include customs and immigration services. MPL chief executive Hussain Shafeeq and Uligan council president Asadullah Mohamed signed the agreement on Sunday, 23 August.

Speaking to PSM, Shafeeq said work on the site would begin soon if preparations remain on schedule. He added that the marina would start on a small scale, with the option to expand its capacity in the future if needed, while the longer-term goal is to develop the site into a world-class marina.

In March 2026, MPL awarded the marina construction project to SASe Construction, which works on infrastructure projects in the Maldives, including harbour construction, coastal protection, utilities and resort developments.

Located in the northernmost town in the Maldives, the project will be developed in an area regularly visited by foreign vessels. Uligan has a port, a radar station and other public facilities, as well as beachfront guesthouses and a restaurant. The island’s economy is supported by tourism, government and private-sector employment, and construction work.
