The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR) hosted representatives from China Ocean Engineering Survey and Design (COESD) in Kiribati from 6-14 May 2026 as work began on the feasibility study for the proposed marina infrastructure project at Ananau Causeway.

Ananau Causeway is located in Tarawa, the capital atoll of Kiribati, a Pacific island nation made up of 33 coral islands across the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line island groups.
Led by general manager Wang Yuanhong alongside Zhao Changpend, Yu Ganyu and Li Jiahao, the COESD team met with the tourism office and the Kiribati Ports Authority during the visit to gather information for the study.
On the final day of the mission, the representatives presented the project concept and next steps to MFOR minister Ribanataake Tiwau and ministry staff.
Expected to be completed by October 2026, the feasibility study grew from bilateral discussions between the government of Kiribati and Korean fishing companies represented by the Korea Overseas Fisheries Association.
The current study follows the signing of a collaboration agreement in May 2025 between MFOR and China Ocean under the China Mechanical and Engineering Corporation Group.
