The Government of Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean has announced a collaboration agreement with China Ocean of the China Mechanical and Engineering Corporation Group (CMEC) to carry out the design phase of the Kiribati marina infrastructure project, including the access channel, at the Ananau causeway. The project is valued at approximately $700,000 AUD and is funded by the Government of Kiribati.
The agreement was formalised on 19 May 2025 in Shenzhen, China, during a signing ceremony attended by the Minister for Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ribanataake Tiwau. The minister acknowledged the significance of the partnership and thanked CMEC for taking on a project expected to benefit the people of Kiribati. Minister Tiwau also commended the combined efforts of both parties for turning the marina vision into a reality.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, design work is scheduled to begin immediately. The planned marina infrastructure, including the access channel, aims to enhance marine facilities in the Ananau causeway area. While specific construction timelines have yet to be disclosed, the agreement marks an important step towards achieving a long-held infrastructure goal.
