Construction has started on the $70 million redevelopment of Harbor Island West Marina in San Diego Bay. The project aims to upgrade the marina, expand capacity and open up more access to the waterfront.

Located at Harbor Island Drive, the marina spans 3.8 acres of land and 22 acres of water. Plans include 623 berths for vessels from 20-140ft (six to 43 metres), along with upgraded facilities for boaters and around 16,000sqft (1,486 sqm) of commercial space.

The marina is managed by Beauchamp Leslie Management & Development, a San Diego-based company with experience in marina operations and design.

Bellingham Marine is responsible for the water-based works, including new dock systems and upgraded utilities. On land, Pacific Building Group is building new spaces such as a boaters’ lounge, fitness centre, pool and spa.

A public viewing deck and waterfront promenade are also planned to improve access along San Diego Bay. The design has been prepared by AO, an architecture and planning firm based in California.

Eric Leslie, CEO of Beauchamp Leslie Management & Development, commented: “This project represents a major investment in the long-term future of Harbor Island West Marina. We’re proud to move into construction with an experienced team and a shared commitment to quality, safety and minimising disruption to marina operations throughout the process.”

Funding for the redevelopment comes from private ownership capital, with additional financing from Wells Fargo. The project is also supported by a 50-year lease agreement with the Port of San Diego.
