Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina (BHSM) has enhanced its marine services with the addition of a new 500 tonnes floating dry dock, “Providence”. The acquisition marks a development, positioning BHSM as the only facility in Boston Harbor to offer a floating dry dock.

Built in 2021 by Conrad Shipyard and engineered by JMS Naval Architects, Providence complies with the Rules for Building and Classing Steel Floating Dry Docks 2020. The dry dock is designed for durability, reliability and safety, allowing BHSM to meet the rising demand for commercial vessel servicing in the region.

Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina, an Ocean Havens property, offers 180 slips and year-round access. The marina also includes waterfront shops and office spaces, land storage for vessels and Harbor Energy, the company’s fuel services division. BHSM currently operates a 50 tonnes Travelift and anticipates the arrival of 80 tonnes lift in the late summer.

Boston Harbor has experienced an increase in water transportation services and offshore support vessels in recent years. The new dry dock responds to the shortage of servicing options in the area. “There is a great shortage of places in the harbour for these ferries and larger commercial vessels to get pulled in for service,” said Marshall Greenland, Property Manager of BHSM. “This new dry dock will allow us to better serve the marine industrial entities in the Northeast.”

The floating dry dock can lift vessels up to 500 tonnes. The dock complements BHSM’s existing support services, including forklifts, shore power and pushboat assistance. “This dry dock is a valuable asset to not only Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina but the entire harbour,” added Dry Dock Manager Myles Murphy, “It allows vessel operators to maintain their fleets locally, reducing the need for extended travel to alternative shipyards.”
