Westhaven Marina in Auckland has completed the full replacement of L pier, marking another step in its ongoing infrastructure improvement programme. The four-month project follows a deconstruction and installation phase that began in February.

L pier had reached the end of its functional life, which prompted a refurbishment that included the removal of all existing components and the installation of new piles, walkways, finger pontoons, power pedestals and fire hose reels. The replacement follows the successful rebuild of K pier in late 2024 and forms part of a wider strategy to upgrade key assets throughout the marina.

Contractors Total Marine Services led the redevelopment with the implementation of cost-effective methods, bringing the project forward in the schedule. In alignment with Westhaven’s environmental goals, the majority of materials removed from both K and L piers were repurposed across New Zealand and the wider Pacific region.
Examples of reused materials include concrete pontoons shipped to the northern Cook Islands for a new cruising boat facility and timber piles transformed into fencing and farm structures in Kaipara. Additionally, 90 percent of timber walers were reused for planter boxes and farm buildings in South Auckland, while all old steel parts were sent to metal recyclers. Foam-filled pile floaters were the only non-recyclable elements, prompting Westhaven to transition to fully recyclable, with foam-free alternatives in future upgrades.

The latest refurbishment forms part of a series of maintenance and infrastructure initiatives at the marina. The upgrades include an ongoing seawall upgrade project aimed at mitigating coastal flooding, the installation of safety panels on pier gangways and various pile replacements and floating structure enhancements across other piers such as A, Q, and X.

Further upgrades are scheduled throughout 2025, including the replacement of timber walers on Y pier. Marina staff continue to coordinate closely with berth holders to ensure smooth transitions during works and to minimise disruption.

Situated near central Auckland, Westhaven Marina provides berths for around 1,800 vessels. The marina features facilities including a refuelling station, public boat ramp and charter services. Maintenance infrastructure in the marina includes boatyards, slipways and dry stack berths. The marina also hosts yacht clubs, marine businesses and hospitality venues.
Westhaven Marina’s commitment to environmental stewardship and infrastructure renewal reflects its long-term vision to create a more sustainable and resilient waterfront precinct.
