The proposed expansion of Stranraer Marina in Scotland has moved to the final stage of the approval process, according to an announcement from Dumfries and Galloway Council on Friday, 6 February 2026.

Dumfries and Galloway Council

The council has submitted its full business case to the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, with the proposal subject to UK and Scottish government scrutiny ahead of consideration by the Borderlands Partnership Board on 11 March 2026.

Councillors agreed in December 2025 to move the project through the remaining approval stages and to approve council funding for the marina expansion. Project costs will remain commercially confidential until the partnership board reaches a decision.

If approval is granted, the expansion would increase the marina’s capacity to more than 230 berths. Planned works include improvements to shoreside facilities, strengthened wave and breakwater protection, and repairs to ageing quay walls. The project also includes new facilities for the Solway Coast and Marine Project and HM Coastguard.

The marina is expected to attract an additional 20,000 visitors annually and contribute around £35 million ($47 million USD) to the local economy. The project is forecast to create 30 permanent jobs and support around 180 jobs during construction. Further regeneration activity valued at approximately £8 million ($10 million) is also expected within the first five years.

The marina expansion is part of Stranraer’s One Waterfront programme, alongside the Water Sports Hub, active travel improvements, public space works, and cultural and environmental initiatives along the waterfront.

If the project is approved in March, the council plans to award the construction contract later that month, with construction expected to begin in spring 2026.
