The Queensland Government has announced a revitalisation plan for Port Hinchinbrook to restore marina access, improve public waterways and address long-standing development issues. The site has been declared the state’s first Provisional Priority Development Area (PPDA).

The plan includes removing dredging spoils from the marina to provide all-tide access for boats and clearing passage for the local coast guard to enhance safety. The government will also resolve legal matters that have previously restricted redevelopment and economic growth.

The project will involve the acquisition of selected land parcels within the 140-hectare PPDA to address economic and environmental challenges. Private residential properties will not be affected. The current deed over the property will be extinguished to allow redevelopment to proceed.

“Port Hinchinbrook has been neglected for far too long, and today marks the beginning of a new chapter for this proud North Queensland community. This historic declaration is the first step towards unlocking the Port’s economic and tourism potential and finally fixing the issues that have held this community back for a decade. This is about delivering a fresh start for regional Queensland and rebuilding opportunities by restoring jobs, tourism and growth,” said Premier David Crisafulli.

Economic Development Queensland will lead the project with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, industry stakeholders and the community. Final approvals for infrastructure works, including marina dredging, will be secured before PPDA is formalised.

Residents can provide feedback prior to formalisation in January 2026, with enabling works and dredging planned for the second half of 2026.
