The Port of Bellingham has released the Point Roberts Economic Development Strategy (EDS), a report to address the community’s challenges and guide long-term growth. The report outlines opportunities to strengthen the local economy, improve infrastructure and reduce dependence on seasonal and cross-border tourism.

Point Roberts faces challenges due to its geographic isolation. Located south of Vancouver, Canada, the area is accessible from mainland Washington by crossing two international borders. Its small population, limited services and infrastructure constraints have long hindered its growth, leaving the community dependent on Canadian visitors for much of its economic activity.

Central to the strategy report is the potential public acquisition and redevelopment of the Point Roberts Marina. The property spans 150 acres and includes more than 900 recreational boat slips, a repair facility, a fuelling station, a restaurant, a yacht club and offices. Other surrounding land remains underutilised under private ownership.

Redevelopment concepts include a maritime village with mixed-use spaces, public waterfront areas and upgraded amenities for boaters and visitors. Other recreation-focused ideas feature transient moorage, outdoor markets, sailing schools and accommodation facilities. A public acquisition would allow the port to coordinate infrastructure upgrades and align with community priorities.

The broader strategy also emphasises the need for a centralised sewer system, as current septic limitations restrict residential and commercial development. Expanding broadband capacity is also recommended to support modern business operations and remote work. Additionally, the report proposes establishing a Resilience Hub to support workforce training, small business incubation and community engagement.

Port Economic Development Director Tyler Schroeder stated: “The Port’s mission is to support sustainable economic development throughout Whatcom County. This study highlights opportunities to overcome the unique challenges in Point Roberts and build a more resilient local economy.”

The Port will present the EDS to the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee on 16 October at the Point Roberts Community Centre.
