Four marinas in Michigan have recently been certified under the Michigan Clean Marina Program. Freedom Boat Club in Harrison Township, Harbor View Marina and Ludington Municipal Marina in Ludington, and Riverside Marina in Detroit will hold certification through 2028.

With these new certifications, the total number of Clean Marinas in Michigan rises to 105. Seven additional marinas have recertified for the next five years: Club Royale - Cass Lake, Copper Harbor State Harbor and Lac Labelle State Dock, East Tawas State Dock, Miller Marina, Port Austin State Harbor and Wyandotte Marina.
The Michigan Clean Marina Program, run with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, Michigan Sea Grant and the Michigan Boating Industries Association, encourages marinas to follow environmentally responsible practices. Certification recognises efforts in marina management, stormwater control, vessel maintenance, waste handling and compliance with laws to protect Michigan’s waterways.
“Marinas like these and the many others who participate in this disciplined programme show they are aware of and practice good environmental and business stewardship practices. The programme is a win-win by implementing and certifying on-the-dock practices to minimise potential pollution and encouraging boaters to also take good care of the water and within the marina,” says Mark Breederland, Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator and Chair of the Michigan Clean Marina Foundation Board.
“We have been told Michigan has more certified clean marinas than any other state. As more boaters are becoming aware of the programme, they are searching out these facilities as places they want to patronise,” says Nicki Polan, Executive Director of the Michigan Boating Industries Association.
Freedom Boat Club in Harrison Township operates 20 boats along Lake St. Clair’s Clinton River. Harbor View Marina in Ludington has 160 slips for vessels up to 18 metres and wall ties for boats up to 30 metres, with nearby shops, restaurants and a beach.
Ludington Municipal Marina accommodates vessels up to 38 metres and offers diesel fuel, holding tank pump-out service, seasonal and transient slips, and basic onshore amenities. Riverside Marina in Detroit provides 200 slips for vessels between 11 and 20 metres, dockage, a 60-tonne crane, fuel services and recreational facilities, including a pool, jacuzzi and courts.
