The $19.8 million NZD (about $11.5 million USD) redevelopment of Havelock Marina in New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds has entered the tender stage, with project packages now released to the market ahead of works expected to begin later in 2026.

Marlborough Sounds Marinas

Havelock Marina currently provides 340 berths for vessels between 10 and 30 metres and supports aquaculture activity, recreational boating and marine access across the Marlborough Sounds region.

The redevelopment will restore navigational depth in the marina basin and entrance channel after severe storms in 2021 and 2022 caused sediment build-up that reduced low-tide access for aquaculture operators, residents and other marina users in the region.

The project also includes replacing ageing wooden piers with floating concrete jetties, alongside new gangways, utility services and upgrades to landside areas around the marina.

Tender packages include piling works, dredging, jetty installation, removal of older marina structures and upgrades to pavements, rock revetments, power, water and communications services.

Material removed during dredging will be processed at a Port Marlborough site before being transported to a designated deposition area. The area will later be returned to pasture, with additional planting planned around nearby waterways.

Funding for the redevelopment includes an investment from Port Marlborough and a loan from the Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund managed by Kānoa - Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit.

The redevelopment project was initiated in January 2024, with design and planning work taking place between March and October 2025. Environmental assessments and iwi engagement were also completed during the same period before consent applications were lodged in October 2025.
