The construction of a “leisure marina” and up to 83 new homes on the site of a former shipyard in Cheshire, England, have been approved nearly eight years after plans were first submitted.

Cheshire West and Chester Council first approved an application to transform Northwich’s Weaver Shipyard in 2020, however plans had been stalled by years of legal wrangling amid concerns from local councillors and some residents about flooding, increased traffic and the impact on biodiversity in the area.
According to the developers H2O Urban, Weaver Shipyard is a brownfield site and “former shipyard that has fallen into a state of disrepair”, adding that the proposed development “will also provide public access down to the waterfront whilst also linking into the public paths along with the Marshall’s Arm Nature Reserve”. A new marina and moorings will also be built.
H2O Urban – a partnership between The Canal & River Trust and the private development company Bloc – have said the new marina would “enhance” services for the existing marina business, claiming it would also support improved mooring opportunities within the marina and along the River Weaver frontage.
The final approval of the plans means that construction on the site may now begin.
