New Zealand’s Port Marlborough has appointed Isaac Construction to begin dredging and infrastructure upgrades at Havelock Marina on 9 November 2026. With completion expected by December 2027, the works aim to restore navigational access affected by sediment build-up and improve facilities for marina users.

The redevelopment will replace the ageing timber jetties at piers D, E and F with floating concrete pontoons and upgrade water, electricity and communications services. Port Marlborough will also renew the pavements and parking areas serving piers C to G and build a new 20-metre jetty to provide access for visiting vessels and Marlborough Sounds residents.
Dredging will cover sections of the marina basin from piers D to G and the navigation channel past Cullen Point, following storms in 2021 and 2022 that increased the estimated sediment removal requirement from approximately 1,500 to 20,000 cubic metres every five years. The removed material will be treated at a designated site south of Havelock, which will later be restored to pasture, with native plants added along nearby waterways.
The project has received government support through the Regional Infrastructure Fund, administered by Kānoa - Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit. Port Marlborough chief executive Rhys Welbourn said securing a financially sustainable long-term solution had been a priority, given the importance of marine access to local businesses, residents and boaters.
“Around 80 percent of Marlborough’s aquaculture production is landed through Havelock, while the marina provides an essential marine connection for approximately 950 permanent residents and 130 businesses across the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds.”
Welbourn also acknowledged potential disruption to marina operations during construction and said access would be maintained wherever possible. He added: “We’re looking forward to seeing the improvements take shape and we thank the Havelock community, our customers and marina users for their patience while we deliver a lasting solution for Havelock for industry, recreational boaties and Sounds Residents.”
