The Gateway Marina project at Burnett Heads in Queensland is progressing again under the control of original developer and funder, Simon Harvey, after entering receivership in 2024 during a partnership dispute.

Vision for the Gateway Marina project. The Gateway

Gateway Marina is planned for Boat Harbour near Bundaberg, with the approved masterplan including a 318-berth marina, waterfront housing, accommodation, retail space, dining venues and tourism facilities.

The project has appointed Bellingham Marine as its delivery partner for stage 1, which is expected to include 92 berths in total, comprising 88 private recreational berths, four commercial berths and a fuel dock.

Expressions of interest are now open for the private recreational marina berths, which will cater to vessels from 10 to 22 metres. The marina is expected to welcome its first boat owners by the end of the year.

“While the journey to get to this point has been lengthy, complex and at times exhausting, this is a project that was worth fighting for. My belief in the region and the potential of the Boat Harbour has only strengthened – for boat owners, for local businesses and for the broader community. Retaining the original vision has always been important to me, and I’m excited to now bring that to life in a way the community can be proud of,” Harvey said.

Harvey also acknowledged support from Gladstone Ports Corporation and government representatives during discussions regarding commercial and tenure arrangements for the marina.

Bundaberg regional council welcomed the project’s return, with mayor Helen Blackburn saying the development could contribute to tourism, jobs and waterfront accommodation in the region.
