The City of Port Alberni in British Columbia, Canada, has formally ended its land lease agreements with the Port Alberni Port Authority. The decision covers Clutesi Haven Marina and Parcel C at Harbour Quay and follows discussions between the two parties over fair market value for the use of city-owned land.

According to the city’s announcement, the change reflects an effort to ensure municipal properties provide fair value for taxpayers.

Mike Fox, Chief Administrative Officer, said: “The City of Port Alberni’s strategic plan places a strong emphasis on maximising the value and potential of city-owned lands. Fair market value is an integral part of that vision, and while we deeply value the years of partnership with the Port Alberni Port Authority, this decision ultimately reflects what is best for our community. We are committed to ensuring the continued growth and success of Port Alberni, and this step will help us achieve that.”

Clutesi Haven Marina

Clutesi Haven Marina, located at the meeting point of the Somass River and the Alberni Inlet, accommodates up to 165 vessels, including 28 covered boathouses. The marina serves local boaters as well as visitors travelling towards Tofino and the Pacific Rim National Park.

Public access to the marina, boat launch and parking areas will remain open. Food trucks will continue operating on site, and the city will assume management of the vendor village, green spaces, performance stage and outdoor dining area in the coming months.

In a notice, the Port Alberni Port Authority confirmed: “We are committed to ensuring a smooth hand over. The transition will not affect marina operations, nor will it disrupt the services provided by the food trucks currently located on-site.”

Fox added: “We extend our gratitude to the Port Alberni Port Authority for years of cooperation and wish them continued success in their future endeavours. We look forward to working directly with the community to make the most of Clutesi Haven Marina ensuring it continues to contribute positively to the vibrancy of Port Alberni.”

The lease ending also includes Parcel C at Harbour Quay Marina. The wider area of the marina features 15 berths, over 600 metres of side-tie moorage and facilities such as electricity, washrooms, showers and laundry amenities.
