Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled 20 transformational projects across Central New York aimed at revitalising downtown, to enhance waterfront access and boost local economies. Among the initiatives is the $2.5 million USD redevelopment of Beacon Bay Marina in Aurora, which reflects a renewed focus on marina and waterfront enhancements for community and economic growth.

The redevelopment of Beacon Bay Marina, supported by a $9.7 million allocation for nine projects in Aurora, Cayuga and Union Springs, will transform the existing marina building into new lodging units, a property manager’s apartment and a small open-air gathering space. The project also includes new docks to accommodate increased boating activity, which signals an investment in recreational boating infrastructure.

Additional marina-focused improvements in the region include the creation of a marina gateway, a new shopfront entrance and a waterfront café, which will enhance visitor amenities and promote year-round activity along the waterfront. The projects complement broader efforts such as the construction of the Southern Gateway Aurora Waterfront Park, which features ADA-compliant trails, canoe and kayak launches and picnic facilities.

In Canastota, the NY Forward programme has allocated $4.5 million for seven projects along the village’s Erie Canal location. The revitalisation of North Canal Street includes upgrades of canal-adjacent public spaces and a new village park with a canal overlook, pavilion, boat launch and water circulation features. The initiatives aim to strengthen the village’s waterfront appeal and stimulate economic activity through improved recreational opportunities and commercial development.
Brewerton’s four NY Forward projects, also valued at $4.5 million, focus on expanding mixed-use developments and enhancing waterfront recreation. A $1.5 million upgrade to Lighthouse Park will introduce a two-slip public boat launch, ADA-compliant fishing platforms, a kayak launch and new amenities including a nature play facility and restrooms, which will enhance the park’s role as a regional outdoor destination.

Economic development officials highlight the importance of the marina and waterfront projects as part of the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward programmes. The efforts are designed not only to stimulate tourism and local business but also to create walkable, accessible public spaces that reflect the unique character of Central New York’s communities.

Governor Hochul emphasised the role of the investments in strengthening neighbourhoods for future generations, while regional leaders expressed optimism that the projects will generate long-term economic and social benefits. With a combined investment of more than $18 million across the municipalities, Central New York is poised to see revitalisation that balances heritage preservation with modern infrastructure development.
As the projects progress, they are expected to create new housing, retail and recreational spaces that foster communities anchored by enhanced marina and waterfront facilities.
