Saxon Harbor marina, located in northern Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Superior, has been recertified as a Wisconsin clean marina.

“For Saxon Harbor, maintaining Clean Marina certification is important because it emphasises environmental stewardship of Lake Superior, strengthens the harbour’s business attractiveness and reputation, mitigates risks and regulatory exposure, supports the local economy and tourism and ties into the harbour’s infrastructure resilience and sustainability goals,” said Tara Krall, marina office manager.

Since first being certified in 2020, the marina has added many bioretention areas, native plantings and vegetated buffers that protect against erosion and flooding and prevent pollution from entering Lake Superior. Other best management practices include a fish cleaning station, fishing line recycling, and boater education and clean fuelling practices.

“We would like to congratulate Saxon Harbor on their recertification and their dedication to clean and safe boating practices,” said Theresa Qualls, Clean Marina programme coordinator.

Saxon Harbor is an 81-slip marina plus transient docking. Amenities include water and electrical hookup, gasoline, diesel, pump out, fish cleaning station, bathrooms and showers, three launches with plenty of trailer parking and a kayak launch. The campground has 31 campsites including five rustic walk-in sites.

The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program was launched in 2010, and 26 Wisconsin marinas have since taken steps to voluntarily adopt practices to become certified. Marinas and related industries contribute more than $2.7 billion USD to Wisconsin’s economy. The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program is administered by Wisconsin Sea Grant in partnership with the Wisconsin Marine Association, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Fund for Lake Michigan.
