Marina Projects Limited is progressing with the process to secure key licences for the redevelopment of Newhaven Marina in East Sussex, England. Appointed by Newhaven Marina Holding Company Ltd., the consultancy is leading the marine consent and licensing requirements for major upgrades to the marina’s infrastructure, as part of a broader regeneration plan for the waterfront.

Approved by Lewes District Council’s planning committee, the redevelopment includes a full reconfiguration of the existing 300-berth marina. The planned works cover dredging, removal and installation of pontoons and piles, and a new full tidal access configuration. These changes aim to improve facilities for berth holders and enhance navigational access to south coast cruising routes and cross-channel connections.
To support the redevelopment, Marina Projects is responsible for securing a harbour works consent via Newhaven Port and Properties, a marine licence through the UK’s Marine Management Organisation and planning consent through Lewes District Council. This marine phase follows the approval of a wider mixed-use development, which includes 400 riverside homes, a 50-bedroom apartment hotel with a gym and space for cafés and restaurants.

“After many years of work to secure the consents for a landside masterplan for the redevelopment of Newhaven Marina, we were delighted to be appointed by Newhaven Marina Holding Company Ltd to deal with the licences and consents required to deliver the waterside elements of the scheme,” said Russ Levett, Newhaven Marina Manager and Project Manager at Marina Projects.
“Through our experience and expertise in handling such marine licences, we were able to undertake the works and secure all of the necessary consents in order that phase one of the scheme could commence in October 2024. With phase one now complete, we look ahead to the second and third phases during 2025 and 2026, that will see the remainder of the marina completely removed, dredging undertaken and a new Walcon walkashore pontoon system installed.”
