A community group in Gagetown, New Brunswick, is raising funds to purchase the village’s marina and the adjoining Old Boot Pub as the waterfront property moves closer to a sale.

The Gagetown Marina sits along the lower Saint John River and offers dock space for short and long-term stays, fuel services, electrical hookups, a pump-out station and on-site facilities such as showers and laundry. The pub stands on the same property and overlooks the marina and river.

According to a report by Allyson McCormack of CBC News, Nancy MacQuade Webb owns the marina, pub and adjacent apartments and has tried to sell the property for a number of years.

The pub did not open last summer for the first time in its 20-year history. In response, residents, business owners and boaters from across southern New Brunswick have begun raising money through debentures, with the aim of purchasing the property through a co-operative.

Contributors have pledged between $1,000 and $25,000 CAD. The group aims to raise $1 million by the end of January, which would allow them to purchase the property and make updates to the site.

In a statement released by the Arcadia municipal government, mayor Clinton Sharpe said the municipality supports ongoing efforts related to the Gagetown Marina and said restoration work is expected to benefit the surrounding community.

“The marina is more than a local asset, it is a shared resource that supports tourism, recreation, economic development and community identity across our region,” said Sharpe.
