Bahamaland Waterways has acquired Port Lucaya Marina and the Grand Bahama Yacht Club in Freeport, with plans to redevelop facilities in phases to support marine activity and local tourism.

According to a report by Shorrell Dames for ZNS Northern Service, managing partner Peter Hunt announced the acquisition at the Port Lucaya Marketplace and said the government, including prime minister Philip Davis, supported the completion of the transaction.

Robyn Major, retail and entertainment manager at the marketplace, said the first phase of work at the marina is expected to begin in the coming months, with a second phase planned for a later date. She said the redevelopment is expected to benefit straw market vendors, arts and crafts businesses, and marketplace tenants.

According to the Association of Bahamas Marinas, the Grand Bahama Yacht Club can accommodate vessels up to 220ft (67 metres) and is a designated port of entry. It has a fuel dock, a swimming pool, dining facilities and access to nearby golf courses, tennis courts and restaurants.

Port Lucaya Marina, which is temporarily closed, has 106 berths and can accommodate vessels up to 190ft (58 metres). The marina is located near Grand Bahama International Airport and the Pelican Bay Resort and shares the same channel as the yacht club.

The cost of the acquisition was not disclosed.
