The board of directors of the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has selected Port Med Formentera to take over the management and operation of La Savina marina under a 16-year concession that includes more than €16.6 million ($19 million USD) in investment.
Extending from the Levante and Poniente basins to the commercial quay, the concession covers 2.8 hectares of water surface and 1.38 hectares of land with moorings, dry storage, commercial and service buildings, fuel supply facilities and recreational boating areas.
The APB said Port Med Formentera received the highest overall rating in the public tender based on functional, urban planning and environmental criteria. Under the concession, the marina will undergo upgrades to its facilities and port services and improve its connection with the town and the coastline.
Plans for the marina’s outdoor spaces were among the highest-scoring aspects of the proposal, including landscaped areas, street furniture and construction features along the seafront promenade. The proposal also includes changes to the water area to increase the marina’s capacity and accommodate different types of recreational vessels.
A new building with more retail spaces is also included in the concession, featuring terraces and covered areas on the ground floor, as well as the construction of an underground car park with 90 spaces.
Environmental measures include the installation of artificial micro-reefs developed by Ocean Ecostructures, the use of ECOncrete technology in new mooring bollards and the Bioremed Savina project, developed in collaboration with Mediterranean Algae to help reduce eutrophication in the harbour waters, alongside charging points for personal mobility vehicles and an electric vehicle charging station.
