Sjötek has been appointed to rebuild the pedestrian walkways at Öregrund harbour on Sweden’s east coast, with work due to start on 12 October 2026 and the completed route expected to open in spring 2027.

Östhammar Municipality

According to Östhammar Municipality, the existing timber walkways at the harbour require significant maintenance as many are considered worn and unsafe, and some have accessibility limitations. The problem becomes more pressing during the summer as Öregrund attracts more residents and visitors, increasing traffic around the site and leading pedestrians to use the walkways to ease pressure on nearby streets and roads.

The municipality plans to build a three-metre-wide walkway from Brobänken to Hamnplan, removing the existing timber structure and reinforcing some foundations in the water. Its design is expected to create a more even height between sections, add a railing on the inner side and include accessible connections at selected points.

The 10 million Swedish kronor ($995,000 USD) project will begin with demolition on 12 October, followed by construction of the new walkway through October and November and final work in December, before it is expected to open in spring 2027.
