As redevelopment continues at Marina Port Valencia in Spain, new mooring systems using ECOncrete technology have been installed to support marine life and reduce the infrastructure’s environmental impact.

Marina Port Valencia’s redevelopment covers both waterfront and onshore areas and is expected to include three renovated marinas with berths for vessels measuring between eight and 130 metres, a dry storage area and a technical shipyard for maintenance and refit operations.

Among the latest additions are new pontoon systems, known as eco-moorings, which were built by CHM and designed to support marine organisms such as algae, sponges and small invertebrates. As these species settle on the eco-moorings, they are expected to create habitats that support biodiversity within the marina and form a natural layer that helps protect the concrete from marine degradation.

The development of calcifying species on the mooring blocks could also contribute to carbon sequestration and improved water quality over time. The installation of these blocks during the construction phase is designed to reduce the redevelopment’s environmental footprint and encourage connection between yachting activities and marine ecosystems.

Marina Port Valencia said the use of these systems reflects a growing trend in coastal infrastructure development that combines durability with environmental considerations, adding that adopting such solutions supports its transition towards “a more sustainable future, with coastal conservation playing an increasingly important role in protecting and enhancing the marine environment.”
