The City of Giżycko in north-eastern Poland issued an environmental decision on 9 September 2026 for the Giżycko Fishing Association’s planned marina redevelopment on Lake Popówka Duża, concluding that the project does not require an environmental impact assessment.
The association applied for environmental conditions on 28 April 2026, after which the city sought additional information and consulted the district sanitary inspector in Giżycko, Polish Waters and the regional director for environmental protection in Olsztyn, which each found that a full environmental impact assessment was not required. According to the city’s decision, the plans will keep the marina at its existing site without dredging, changes to the lake bed or water level, or the removal of trees, shrubs, reeds and other aquatic vegetation.
And although the site is located within the Great Masurian Lakes Landscape Protection Area and about 500 metres from the Ostoja Północnomazurska Natura 2000 site, authorities found no expected negative effects on its protected species and habitats or on the relevant surface water and groundwater bodies.
The marina currently provides 167 mooring spaces for angling vessels across three floating jetties and two fixed shore-based jetties. The project will remove these structures and build four floating jetties and a slipway for launching and retrieving watercraft, while keeping the same mooring capacity. The new jetties will cover a combined 534sqm, slightly less than the existing 535.2sqm, and will be spaced about 44 metres apart along approximately 152 metres of shoreline.
Plans also include a purpose-built shelter for separate waste collection, and water and electricity will be supplied through planned connections to existing utility networks.
