POSINODE, a continuous water quality monitoring service developed by Mediterranean Algae, is now operating at Club de Mar-Mallorca in Palma, Spain. The marina is the first location in the Balearic Islands to adopt the service, which uses EU-funded technology to provide real-time data for environmental monitoring and the early detection of potential pollution incidents.

POSINODE complements existing water quality monitoring practices by providing continuous data between periodic sampling and analysis. The system measures the physical and chemical properties of seawater and tracks how water quality changes over time. It also helps identify potential incidents, including possible hydrocarbon spills, through early alerts and provides historical data and reports for environmental assessments.
The new service supports the 500-berth marina’s efforts to modernise its environmental management following renovations to its facilities this year, including the inauguration of new pedestrian walkways to improve access between the site and Palma’s waterfront.
María Miralles, head of quality and environment at Club de Mar-Mallorca, said: “Having reliable, continuous data helps us understand our surroundings better, anticipate potential incidents and keep moving towards a more sustainable and efficient port model.”
The monitoring service is already operating at Pier 70 and has received funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the Kit Espacios de Datos grant programme. The project also follows the approval of Spain’s Maritime Strategy 2025-2050 in June 2025, which focuses on digitalisation, environmental protection and the competitiveness of recreational boating.
